A name that carried weight across late-night club spaces long before streaming platforms made access immediate, Justin Vee built his reputation through steady presence and deep involvement in the culture, not through shortcuts or sudden attention.
Raised in Johannesburg, his introduction to music didn’t begin behind equipment or inside a studio. It started in crowded rooms and packed dance floors. As a teenager, while others were caught up in the moment, he paid attention to the details. He studied how records shifted moods, how transitions could change the direction of a night, and how a DJ, without saying a word, could hold control over an entire crowd. That awareness became the foundation of everything that followed.
Experimentation came early. Small house gatherings became his testing ground, giving him space to understand timing, selection, and crowd response. What began as curiosity soon developed into something more focused.
By the mid-1990s, he was no longer figuring things out alone. Mentorship from respected figures such as Paul Almeida, Mario Viegas, and DJ Spiro helped refine his approach, sharpening both his ear and discipline. That period set the tone for his next move.
In 1996 and 1997, he stepped into Johannesburg’s established club circuit and made an immediate impression. Venues like ESP and Nexus became key stops, and within a short time, he moved from guest appearances to holding residencies. That shift signaled trust from both promoters and audiences, a recognition of his ability to manage a room and maintain momentum across a full set.
Still, limiting himself to DJing was never part of the plan. His interest extended into the technical side of music, leading him to BMG Studios South Africa, where he worked as a sound engineer. This phase placed him in direct contact with the recording process, contributing to sessions involving well-known acts such as Just Jinjer, Watershed, Judith Sephuma, and TKZee. Through that environment, he became part of a larger industry framework, especially during the period when BMG transitioned into Sony BMG and later Sony Music Entertainment.
Creatively, his foundation sits firmly in house music, though not confined to a single direction. His selections and productions draw from different corners of the genre, moving between funk-influenced elements and more technical textures, always guided by basslines that keep people moving. This flexibility allowed him to adapt across different settings, from underground gatherings to large-scale events like H2O.
Beyond clubs and studio work, he also expanded into broadcasting. As part of the Mutha FM network, he contributes as both a DJ and a show host. Through the Love Mee project alongside ME’shalle, he co-hosts a recurring radio show, extending his reach into digital platforms while maintaining ties to the culture that shaped him.
His catalogue reflects consistency over time rather than sudden bursts. With multiple radio hits, several Top 40 singles, and more than ten DJ mix albums, his output mirrors a career built gradually, without rushing the process.
What stands out most is his ability to remain present across changing phases of electronic music. While many fade after a particular era, Justin Vee continued working, adjusting where necessary while holding on to a clear identity rooted in house.
